It's that time of year again! Temperatures are dropping below freezing and it seems whatever can go wrong or break will do so on the coldest days imaginable. Have you ever noticed, you hardly ever have a plumbing leak when the weather is nice and warm? Let the temperature drop below freezing and you can bet the bank plumbing problems will appear! Whether it's a leaking pipe, hot water problems or a broken water line, you can count on Mother Nature to make your day.
There's nothing like going to the mailbox on a 25 degree day to find your water bill has tripled. Guess what? More than likely you have a leak, and yes, it's 25 degrees outside! I know most people at this point will call their favorite plumber only to find out he is backed up for 2 weeks and can't get to it. This is because half the people in town have similar issues and there's only so many plumbers to go around.
That's when the "do-it-yourself" starts to come out in people. You figure, how hard can it be? Well always remember, nothing goes according to plan when the temperature is below freezing! After digging up half the yard or laying on your back in the crawl space for 3 hours, I personally start hating cold weather. I also go back to the question, why couldn't this have happened when the temperature was in the 70's? I have just about came to the conclusion it's Mother Nature's way of playing a cruel joke on homeowners who enjoyed the beautiful days of spring and put home maintenance on hold until the dead of winter...
